| | On the frontier between France and Brittany, a mighty stone castle protected the Vitré from the 11th century on and the town walls were added soon after. In the 14th century the town turned to trade and became one of the most flourishing cloth towns. The towns merchants travelled abroad to sell their canvas. This tough cloth, made out of hemp, was in great demand. Within the town walls, they had half-timbered and stone town-houses built, some of which were decorated with carvings.
